Bar Karma Case Study

Initial Client Request
Current TV asked us to produce a number of webisodes to help promote their ground- breaking series Bar Karma. Additionally they wanted ideas on how to help explain Bar Karma’s crowd-sourced approach to storytelling – all done with an eye on costs.

Creative
We brought several ideas back to Current, and from this creative, the concept of shooting a BTS during the filming of the series pilot was chosen...but this would be a ‘Making-of’ with a twist.

Production & Post
Over the course of the pilot, our crew shot docu-style footage of the shoot, and conducted interviews with cast members, director, and series creator Will Wright. All with an eye on getting viewers so excited about the show that they not only tuned in, but also participated in creating the crowd-sourced storyline.

So the audience had input into characters and storylines…before there was a show on the air? How does that work? Exactly what this video of ours helped explain.

Deliverables
We ended up creating 25 videos that included pieces Current placed in categories Behind the Scenes, Meet the Characters, Meet the Creators, & Featured Video, along with this Trailer.

Results
The clips worked so well at explaining the crowd-sourcing process that several of the videos were put in the community forum to help viewers understand and participate in the interactive process.

Additionally, Current’s initial thought was to air the pilot in one piece on the website to get the community seeded with ideas and overall story direction; however, they decided to break the pilot into pieces and intersperse them with our web clips to better help the community understand the process and thereby become more involved.
